Can you imagine Geelong in the future?

Coastal cities like Geelong are at the forefront of climate change in Australia. No-one knows exactly what this might mean but there are strong indications that future changes could include:

  • Extreme weather events
  • Rising sea levels
  • Hotter, drier summers
  • Warmer, wetter winters.

The Our Coast Project has recently completed the Geelong-Queenscliff Coastal Mapping Project, identifying areas that may experience sea level rise. The assessment includes maps of The Sands area near Leopold, the area around Point Henry, the Moolap precinct and the Geelong Waterfront.  These maps show the potential extent of impact under various sea level rise scenarios and severe weather events.

We're interested in your feedback and ideas for how we can plan to adapt to a changing climate together. The Victorian Government is also conducting a separate review of future land use for northern Moolap, including Point Henry and the former saltworks, as part of the Moolap Coastal Strategic Framework Plan, information regarding this can be found at www.delwp.vic.gov.au/moolap.
